The 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics

At a press conference held at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics were announced.
This year, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson for their research on “how institutions form and how they affect prosperity.” The three economists studied the wealth of nations by comparing countries with different geographical and economic characteristics, demonstrating that the structure of institutions is a decisive factor in this process.

In the statement by the Nobel Committee, it was emphasized: “Societies where the rule of law is weak and institutions abuse their populations do not create growth or positive change. The research of the laureates helps us understand why this happens.”
