Our Faculty Member Assist. Prof. Oğuzhan YELKESEN’s Article Published in an SSCI-Indexed Q1 Journal

A study by Assist. Prof. Oğuzhan YELKESEN , a faculty member of the Department of Public Finance, has been published in International Journal of Emerging Markets, an international academic journal indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and ranked in the Q1 category.

About the Study

The study examines the dynamic and nonlinear relationship between institutional quality and public debt sustainability within the framework of the Fiscal Reaction Function (FRF).

The research covers the period 2002–2020 and analyzes a total of 75 countries, including 33 advanced economies and 42 emerging market economies . Institutional quality is assessed using the Worldwide Governance Indicators.

Research Findings

The findings reveal that institutional quality plays an important role in fiscal sustainability .

In advanced economies, the primary budget balance responds positively to increases in public debt under both low and high institutional quality regimes.

In emerging market economies, however, a positive and significant fiscal response to rising public debt is observed only in countries with high levels of institutional quality.

Significance of the Study

These findings indicate that, particularly in emerging market economies, strong and effective institutions make an important contribution to public debt sustainability .

The study contributes to the fiscal sustainability literature by highlighting the importance of strengthening institutional capacity, particularly in economies where fiscal sustainability is more vulnerable.

We congratulate our faculty member Assist. Prof. Oğuzhan YELKESEN on this valuable academic publication and wish him continued success in his future academic studies.
