Vocational Competency Testing
A New Era in Career Planning at the Department of Economics

Bandirma Onyedi Eylul University, Department of Economics, has taken a significant step by expanding the career guidance application initiated in the Turkish Undergraduate Program to include both Turkish and English Undergraduate Programs. As part of our continuous improvement efforts, we meticulously research our students' interests and professional competencies within our career counseling system. Based on the data obtained, we offer personalized academic roadmaps by recommending the most suitable elective courses and educational content for each student. This comprehensive study, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Armağan Türk, the first-year career advisor for the Turkish Undergraduate Program, aims to reveal the skill sets, personality traits, and academic potential of first-year students right at the beginning of their journey.

Scientific-Based Career Guidance: Vocational Competency Analysis
Deciding on areas of specialization during the first year of university is of critical importance for future career success. With this awareness, the Vocational Competency Test was applied to 94 first-year students in the Department of Economics, with valid results obtained from 87 students. The reports shared with career advisors indicate that our students possess a significant level of proficiency in areas such as "Academic Skills" and "Policy Analysis," while showing that they are still at the fundamental training stage in "Economic Theory" and "Econometrics."

Character Analysis: Personal Awareness via the DiSC Model
In the study led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Armağan Türk, not only academic knowledge but also behavioral patterns in the workplace were analyzed using the DiSC test. The analysis, based on four main personality profiles, yielded the following results:
  • Influence (I Type - 36%): Forming the largest group in the department, these students are social, energetic, and highly persuasive. Fields such as International Trade are recommended for them.
  • Dominance (D Type - 30%): This decisive and goal-oriented group stands out with leadership skills. Career paths such as Management and Strategic Consulting are prioritized for these students.
  • Conscientiousness (C Type - 20%): These analytical and detail-oriented students are seen as the most suitable candidates for Finance, Data Analysis, Academia, and Economic Research.
  • Steadiness (S Type - 14%): These patient and team-oriented individuals are expected to make a difference in Public Institutions and Sustainability Projects.
Determining Career Tendencies with MBTI
The MBTI test, which helps in understanding decision-making processes and self-perception, revealed a striking profile across the department. According to the analysis, 80% of our students exhibit B-type personality traits, while 20% exhibit A-type traits.
Students exhibiting A-type personalities show an inclination towards quantitative roles requiring high attention, such as econometrics, financial economics, and technical data analysis. Conversely, the majority (B-type) show more interest in conceptual and applied fields such as economic theory, political economy, international economics, and strategy development.

Data-Driven Future: Elective Courses and Counseling Strategy
The ultimate goal of all these tests is to enable students to know themselves better and guide them toward the courses and career paths that best suit their interests. These evaluations conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Armağan Türk observed that students have already grasped the fundamental knowledge regarding the economics department and that there are no major performance gaps among them.
The fundamental knowledge gained through courses taken in the Fall semester and the orientation program will allow students to act more consciously when choosing their elective courses in the upcoming semesters.
As the Department of Economics, our goal is not only to transfer theoretical knowledge but to provide an educational environment that maximizes each student's individual potential. These test results are one of the concrete steps our department has taken toward continuously improving educational quality. Our students will start their professional lives one step ahead with the help of personalized reports and career counseling support.
We reiterate that we are always with our students in their career journeys with data-driven guidance and academic support. We would like to thank all our advisors, especially Assoc. Prof. Dr. Armağan Türk.
